Your hiking gear list is largely dependent on the itinerary and the weather forecast (although hikers should always plan for extremes in weather). For day hikes, the essentials include:
Water container and a water filteration system if you cannot carry the recommend amount for your hike (in moderate weather, it's recommend to consume half of a liter (16oz) every hour. In warmer weather, opt for one liter)
Hiking boots or trail shoes and good socks to avoid blisters
Extra food (high calorie bars, gels, trail mix, and electrolytes)
Sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, SPF lip balm, sun hoodie, and a hat)
Multiple layers of moisture-wicking clothing depending on forecast as well as protection against the elements including a rain shell or poncho, gloves, and a hat
Trekking poles
First aid supplies
Navigation (GPS, map, or compass)
Head lamp or light source if you plan to start before sunrise or finish after dusk
Bug spray (especially during tick season)
Emergency shelter (bivy sack) or emergency blanket
Knife or multi-tool
At Hot Springs Hiking Adventures, we ask all day hikers to bring a minimum of 1 liter of water (Smart water bottles can be pre-ordered and are highly recommended for hiking due to their size); to wear sturdy shoes with good traction for stability; and to dress appropriately for all of the elements including rain, snow, and the summer heat. Our guides will take care of the rest including first aid, navigation, and emergency resources and tools as needed. On our full day hikes, we have a fresh lunch option available to enjoy and re-fuel. We also offer trekking pole rentals as needed (recommend for those who have trouble climbing or descending hills and steep sections). While a day pack isn't necessary it can be helpful to carry items, or hikers have the option to rent a hydration vest or waist pack with water storage when booking.
There's no dumb questions when it comes to being prepared so always feel free to reach out if you have questions about what to wear or bring. Let's take a hike!
